Literature Text

To bless, or not to bless – that is the question:
While though in my eyes I watch them suffer
May it be from the arrow of an enemy or a blade of their own,
I watch them wish to wish away their sea of troubles
While sweeping a sea of blood in its place. To watch my children,
Those whom my wings give haven to, pierce the hearts of their brethren
Makes me feel a shudder of contempt that should only ripple upon
Human flesh – and for not ever across skin of starshine. To pray, to die –
To pray for others to die, what life do my children lead? There's my dilemma.
For in my heart I grant them dreams of peace and a wish to make it so,
Yet part of my soul yearns to know what wretched heart would rather
Raise arms to his brother's throat than join hands against life's
Daily torments.  There diminishes my respect for man
And so there my longing to bless them with it.
I who bear the sharp shards of the ages and whose wings beat the air they breathe,
Cannot find it in myself to support the proud knight's longing for an untimely end.
Though I carry the thorns of betrayal in my heart, the scars of my children's burden,
Their insolence at its best, and their whispers of lust,
I shall not brush my feather tips against their filth by aiding them.
Despite their prayers of war, I long to bring a wind of change.
Call me out of place, but how can I not interfere
When it is my children's life in peril?
A spin-off version of Hamlet's soliloquy written from the point of view of a goddess as she watches the humans destroy one another.
